The challenge
Where They Started
- About 160 websites per server
- Averaging 10 req/s, peaking at 100 req/s
- PHP-heavy traffic
- suEXEC required for security — at a huge RAM cost
The solution
- LiteSpeed Web Server 2-CPU license
- PHP suEXEC Daemon mode with shared opcode cache
- RAM use fell from ~40 GB to ~2 GB
- New users add almost no memory
The story
What Happened
Cloud platform Synergy 8 switched from Apache + FastCGI + suEXEC for security reasons, but per-user opcode caches pushed memory use to 40–50 GB with 100 GB committed.
With LiteSpeed's suEXEC Daemon mode, opcode caches are shared safely. Memory use dropped to 2–3 GB immediately, and the freed RAM went to disk caching — making their services faster overall.
Server environment: 2× Xeon X5690 (12 cores) 3.46 GHz, 96 GB RAM.
