The story

What Happened

SigmaWeb, a well-regarded Greek hosting provider, took on two popular WordPress sites serving around 80,000 unique visitors a day. On Apache 2.4 the server ran at a load of 8 with spikes to 12.

After testing a trial license, they installed LiteSpeed through the cPanel plugin in a few minutes. Load fell below 1 and memory use dropped from over 14 GB to under 4 GB, as the number of processes went from 150–200 under Apache to fewer than 10 under LiteSpeed.

The result gave SigmaWeb the confidence to pursue the high-traffic hosting market they had previously avoided.

Server environment: Dell R510, 2× Xeon E5620 (12 cores), 16 GB RAM, 4× 300 GB SAS 15k in RAID 5.
